Masam Project Clears 4,735 Explosive Hazards Across Yemen in August
Aden – Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian demining initiative in Yemen, Project Masam, has successfully removed 4,735 explosive devices during the month of August, according to the project’s media office.
The cleared items include unexploded ordnance (UXO), anti-tank mines, anti-personnel mines, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), all planted by Houthi militias across multiple governorates. The operations covered more than 1 million square meters of land, prioritizing civilian areas such as homes, roads, and vital infrastructure.
During the final week of August alone, Masam teams dismantled 968 explosive threats, including 925 UXO, 32 anti-tank mines, 4 anti-personnel mines, and 7 IEDs.
Project Director Osama Al-Qusaibi confirmed that since its launch in mid-2018, Masam has cleared over 512,000 explosive devices from liberated regions, enabling safer access for civilians and humanitarian workers.
The project continues to play a critical role in Yemen’s post-conflict recovery, offering technical expertise and life-saving intervention in some of the country’s most heavily mined areas.
