Yemen: 64 Families Displaced in One Week Amid Extreme Weather Conditions

Abyan – At least 64 families have been forced to flee their homes across southern Yemen in the past week due to increasingly erratic weather patterns, including flash floods and torrential rains that have devastated vulnerable communities already grappling with conflict and food insecurity.
According to field reports from humanitarian responders, the displacement occurred primarily in the governorates of Abyan, Lahj, and Taiz, where heavy rainfall submerged farmland, damaged shelters, and cut off access to essential services. The affected families—many of whom were already internally displaced—now face secondary displacement, compounding their hardship and deepening the humanitarian crisis.
Local authorities and aid organizations have warned that the situation may worsen, with forecasts predicting continued rainfall and the risk of further flooding. Emergency teams are working to deliver basic supplies, including mattresses, cooking utensils, and hygiene kits, but access remains limited in some areas due to damaged infrastructure.
“This latest wave of displacement highlights the growing impact of climate volatility on Yemen’s fragile humanitarian landscape,” said a spokesperson for the International Rescue Committee. “Families are losing the few remaining sources of food and income they depend on, and many have nowhere safe to return.”
Yemen is considered one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, where environmental shocks intersect with prolonged conflict, economic collapse, and widespread hunger. Humanitarian agencies are calling for urgent international support to scale up relief efforts and help communities recover and rebuild.
