Landmine Explosions Kill Three, Injure Others in Yemen’s Al Jawf and Lahj Provinces

Aden – Three civilians were killed and several others injured this week in separate landmine explosions in Yemen’s Al Jawf and Lahj governorates, according to local sources and humanitarian demining organizations.
In Al Jawf, northeast Yemen, a man identified as Yahia Derham al-Sha’ery sustained serious injuries when a landmine detonated in the al-Yatma area of Khabb wa ash-Sha’af District. The device is believed to have been planted by Houthi forces during earlier clashes in the region.
Less than 24 hours earlier, in Lahj’s Al Qabbaytah District, Mushtaq Jamil al-Qabati was killed after triggering a landmine while walking near his home. His father was also severely wounded in the blast.
These incidents underscore the persistent threat posed by unexploded ordnance across Yemen, where years of conflict have left vast areas contaminated with landmines and improvised explosive devices.
Despite ongoing clearance efforts by initiatives such as Project Masam—which has removed hundreds of thousands of mines since 2018—civilian casualties remain alarmingly frequent.
Humanitarian groups continue to call for increased international support for mine clearance operations and public awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable communities, especially children and displaced families living near former frontlines.
