Over 8,000 Displaced Families Affected by Torrential Rains and Floods in Marib; Shabwa Faces Escalating Weather Crisis

Marib/Shabwa– More than 8,000 internally displaced families in Yemen’s Marib governorate have been severely affected by heavy rains, flash floods, and cyclonic winds that swept across the region this week, according to local humanitarian agencies. The Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management reported widespread destruction across multiple camps, with thousands of shelters either damaged or completely destroyed.
Initial assessments indicate that over 7,000 shelters were impacted, including nearly 3,000 that were entirely washed away by floodwaters. The camps—many of which are located in open desert areas with minimal infrastructure—remain highly vulnerable to further weather deterioration. Aid officials have warned of an impending humanitarian disaster if emergency shelter, drainage systems, and food assistance are not delivered immediately.
Meanwhile, neighboring Shabwa governorate has been experiencing unstable weather conditions since Tuesday, with torrential rains triggering powerful flash floods across several valleys and districts. Local sources report that floodwaters have inundated roads, isolated communities, and damaged agricultural lands, raising concerns over displacement and food insecurity.
Meteorological forecasts predict continued rainfall in both governorates over the coming days, prompting humanitarian organizations to issue urgent appeals for intervention. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has been urged to mobilize resources to support affected populations, particularly vulnerable families living in makeshift shelters.
Yemen’s fragile infrastructure and protracted conflict have left millions at risk during seasonal weather extremes. The latest storms underscore the urgent need for disaster preparedness and resilient shelter solutions for displaced communities.
