Mahra Police Arrest Tunisian National Attempting Illegal Entry into Yemen

Al Mahra -- Security authorities in Yemen’s eastern Al-Mahra governorate announced the arrest of a Tunisian national who attempted to enter the country illegally through the Shahen border crossing with Oman. The arrest was made as part of ongoing efforts by the Mahra Police to combat irregular migration and cross-border smuggling activities.
According to an official statement released by the Mahra Security Department, the Tunisian man was apprehended while trying to bypass legal immigration procedures. He was taken into custody for questioning, and legal measures are currently underway in coordination with relevant judicial and security bodies.
“The individual was detained during routine inspection procedures at the Shahen checkpoint,” the statement read. “He failed to present valid travel documents or entry permits, prompting immediate action by border security personnel.”
The arrest comes amid heightened security operations in Al-Mahra, a strategic governorate bordering Oman and the Arabian Sea. In recent months, the region has witnessed a surge in attempts by foreign nationals to use its remote terrain as a transit route into Yemen or onward to other destinations.
Authorities emphasized their commitment to enforcing immigration laws and preventing the infiltration of individuals who may pose security risks or be involved in smuggling networks. The Mahra Police also reiterated their cooperation with international partners and neighboring countries to monitor and secure border crossings.
This incident follows a broader crackdown on human trafficking and irregular migration in the region. In August 2025, Mahra security forces arrested 38 suspects in connection with smuggling operations involving undocumented migrants of African nationalities.
The detained Tunisian national remains in custody pending further investigation and possible deportation in accordance with Yemeni law. Officials have urged all travelers to adhere to legal entry procedures and warned that violations will be met with strict enforcement.
