Aden -- The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has issued a stark warning about the worsening cholera crisis in Yemen, ranking the war-torn country third globally in terms of suspected cholera infections.

In its latest report, the Geneva-based rights group revealed that Yemen recorded approximately 332,000 suspected cholera cases and 1,073 related deaths between March 2024 and August 2025. The Monitor emphasized that the disease has become endemic in Yemen, citing the widespread transmission, high mortality rates, and the failure to address underlying causes such as the collapse of sanitation infrastructure and limited access to clean water.

The report attributes the resurgence of cholera to the protracted conflict, which has devastated Yemen’s healthcare system and left millions without access to basic services. The Monitor also highlighted the decline in international humanitarian funding, warning that this shortfall is exacerbating the crisis and leaving vulnerable populations at even greater risk.

According to the World Health Organization, Yemen continues to bear one of the heaviest cholera burdens globally, accounting for 35% of all suspected cholera cases worldwide and 18% of global cholera-related deaths as of late 2024. The situation has deteriorated further in 2025, with a significant spike in cases and fatalities compared to the previous year.

The Euro-Med Monitor called on the international community to urgently increase humanitarian aid and support efforts to rehabilitate Yemen’s water and sanitation infrastructure. It also urged all parties to the conflict to facilitate humanitarian access and prioritize public health needs over political and military objectives.

As the rainy season approaches, health experts fear a further surge in infections unless immediate action is taken. The report serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of prolonged conflict and the urgent need for coordinated global intervention to prevent further loss of life.
