EU Indo-Pacific Envoy Voices Support for UN-Led Ship Inspections , Sanctions Enforcement in Yemen
Aden -- The European Union’s Special Envoy for the Indo-Pacific has reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to peace and maritime security in Yemen, expressing strong support for United Nations-led verification and inspection mechanisms for vessels operating in the region.
In a recent statement, the envoy emphasized the EU’s backing of the efforts led by the UN Special Envoy to Yemen and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council sanctions related to the conflict.
Speaking on the sidelines of a diplomatic forum, the envoy stressed that “ensuring compliance with international maritime law and UN sanctions is essential to curbing arms smuggling and sustaining peace efforts in Yemen.”
She highlighted the EU’s ongoing engagement in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, including through its naval mission EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, which aims to protect commercial shipping and uphold freedom of navigation.
The envoy also reiterated the EU’s financial and political support for the UN Peace Support Facility in Yemen, which is jointly managed by the Office of the Special Envoy, the UN Development Programme, and the Resident Coordinator’s Office. This initiative seeks to create conditions conducive to a sustainable political settlement by supporting confidence-building measures and humanitarian access.
Her remarks come amid growing international concern over the flow of illicit weapons into Yemen and the destabilizing impact of Houthi attacks on maritime routes. The EU has consistently condemned such actions and urged all parties to respect international law and engage constructively in the peace process.
The envoy concluded by urging the international community to remain vigilant and united in enforcing UN resolutions, particularly those aimed at preventing the escalation of violence and ensuring accountability for violations.
