Yemen : UN Report Highlights Deepening Global Hunger Crisis
Aden -- In its latest “Hunger Hotspots” analysis, the UN agencies named Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Palestine, Mali, and Haiti as the most critically affected nations.
These countries are experiencing extreme levels of food insecurity driven by a combination of armed conflict, economic collapse, and climate shocks.
- Yemen’s humanitarian situation remains dire, with millions suffering from prolonged conflict, displacement, and economic instability.
- The report warns that some communities in these six countries may soon reach famine or near-famine conditions, unless urgent humanitarian action is taken.
- Other countries of high concern include Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, and Afghanistan, where food insecurity is rapidly worsening.
Drivers of Crisis in Yemen
Yemen’s vulnerability stems from over a decade of conflict, which has devastated infrastructure, disrupted food supply chains, and displaced millions. According to the UNHCR, more than 18 million Yemenis require humanitarian assistance, including 4.5 million internally displaced persons.
The FAO and WFP stress that early intervention is critical to prevent catastrophic outcomes. They call for increased funding, access to affected populations, and coordinated global efforts to address the root causes of hunger.
UN Leadership Calls for Action
WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain emphasized the urgency: “We are seeing the worst hunger emergencies in decades. Without immediate support, millions will face starvation.”
The report serves as a call to action for governments, donors, and humanitarian organizations to prioritize aid and resilience-building in the most threatened regions.
