EU Calls for Immediate Release of Forcibly Disappeared in Yemen, Reaffirms Support for Victims

Sana’a – The European Union has called for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals subjected to enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention in Yemen, reaffirming its solidarity with the victims and their families.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the EU mission to Yemen stressed the urgent need to uncover the fate of the missing and ensure justice and accountability for those responsible. The statement highlighted the alarming rise in cases of enforced disappearance since the outbreak of the conflict in 2015, with civilians—including journalists, activists, and humanitarian workers—among the most affected.
“The European Union stands firmly with the victims of enforced disappearance in Yemen and their families,” the statement read. “We urge all parties to disclose the whereabouts of the missing, guarantee their legal rights, and end these grave violations.”
Human rights organizations have documented hundreds of cases where families remain unaware of the fate of their loved ones, many of whom are believed to be held in secret detention facilities. The EU emphasized that addressing these abuses is essential to achieving peace and stability in Yemen.
This renewed call comes amid growing international pressure on Yemeni parties to respect human rights and halt violations against civilians. The EU also reiterated its support for efforts led by the United Nations and civil society groups working to document abuses and advocate for victims.
