Donald Trump confirms F-35 fighter jet sale to Saudi Arabia
Washington — President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States will proceed with the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two nations. The announcement came just one day before Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is scheduled to visit the White House for high-level talks.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump praised Saudi Arabia as a “great ally” and confirmed the arms deal when asked about Riyadh’s interest in acquiring the stealth aircraft. “We will be doing that. We will be selling F-35s,” Trump said. “They’ve been a great ally,” he added.
The deal is expected to be a centerpiece of discussions during the Crown Prince’s visit, which marks his first trip to Washington in over seven years. According to reports, the Saudi delegation is arriving with a comprehensive wishlist that includes military assurances and advanced defense systems.
The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin, is among the most sophisticated fighter jets in the world, featuring stealth capabilities, advanced sensors, and interoperability with allied forces. While the sale underscores deepening U.S.-Saudi ties, it also raises concerns among regional actors, particularly Israel, which has historically opposed the transfer of such advanced weaponry to neighboring Arab states.
The Trump administration has emphasized its commitment to bolstering defense cooperation with Gulf allies amid rising tensions in the Middle East, especially following U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure earlier this year.
The proposed sale is likely to undergo congressional review, where lawmakers may scrutinize its implications for regional stability and U.S. strategic interests.
