Yemen : Houthis Seize Assets of Detained Party Official’s Family in Sana’a
Sana’a — Houthi militias have empowered their so-called “judicial custodian” to seize properties and assets belonging to the family of Ghazi Ali al-Ahwal, Secretary-General of the General People’s Congress (GPC) faction in areas under their control, who has remained in detention since August under repressive conditions.
The move followed mounting pressure by the Houthis on leaders of the pro-Houthi wing of the GPC in Sana’a, culminating in a decision to dismiss al-Ahwal from his post.
The unprecedented step has sparked widespread anger within party circles, seen as part of a broader campaign to subjugate the GPC and strip it of leaders unwilling to fully align with Houthi directives.
Party sources revealed that the Houthi-appointed judicial custodian has taken control of real estate, commercial properties, and other assets linked to al-Ahwal’s family in the capital.
These include buildings, companies, and holdings, some of which were not formally registered under the family’s name.
According to the sources, the seizures underscore the retaliatory and political nature of the measures, carried out without any legal justification.
The development highlights the Houthis’ continued use of coercive tactics to consolidate power, targeting political figures and their families to silence dissent and enforce loyalty within allied factions.
