Sana'a -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the continued spread of poliovirus in Yemen, reporting approximately 30 new cases so far in 2025. 

Alarmingly, 97 percent of these infections have been recorded in areas under the control of the Houthi authorities, raising concerns about access to vaccination and surveillance efforts.

WHO officials emphasized that the resurgence of polio — a disease once on the brink of global eradication — poses a serious threat to vulnerable populations, especially children. The organization called for urgent cooperation from all parties to facilitate immunization campaigns and ensure safe passage for health workers.

Yemen’s prolonged conflict has severely disrupted healthcare infrastructure, leaving millions of children at risk of preventable diseases. The WHO reiterated its appeal for unhindered humanitarian access and renewed international support to contain the outbreak before it spreads further across the region.
