UNHCR: Over 53,000 Somali Refugees in Yemen Returned Home Since 2015
Aden -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that more than 53,000 Somali refugees in Yemen have returned to their homeland since the outbreak of war in the country.
In a report issued Wednesday, UNHCR said a total of 53,525 Somali refugees had gone back to Somalia between 2015 and 2025.
Of these, 9,217 refugees were assisted through the agency’s voluntary repatriation program, while 44,308 others returned independently during the same period.
According to the report, 2015 marked the highest number of returns, with 26,383 Somali refugees leaving Yemen following the escalation of conflict. The following years saw smaller waves of returns: 5,566 in 2017, 4,882 in 2018, and 3,635 in 2019.
By contrast, 2025 recorded the lowest figure, with only 779 refugees returning.
UNHCR noted that the figures reflect both the impact of Yemen’s protracted crisis on refugee communities and the resilience of Somali families seeking safety and stability back in their country.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting voluntary, dignified returns while continuing to provide protection for those who remain displaced.
