Masam Project Clears Over 5,000 Explosive Remnants in Yemen During October
Aden – The Saudi-funded Masam Project has announced the clearance of more than 5,000 explosive devices from war-affected areas in Yemen during the month of October, as part of its ongoing humanitarian demining operations across the country.
According to the project’s latest monthly report, Masam teams successfully removed a total of 5,005 explosive remnants of war (ERW), including anti-personnel mines, anti-tank mines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). These hazardous materials were scattered across several liberated regions, posing a severe threat to civilians, especially children and farmers.
The cleared items included:
- 4,326 unexploded ordnance
- 621 anti-tank mines
- 49 anti-personnel mines
- 9 improvised explosive devices
Masam’s operations in October covered strategic areas in Taiz, Marib, Shabwa, and Al-Jawf governorates, where remnants of past battles continue to endanger lives and hinder access to farmland, schools, and roads. The project emphasized that its teams are working under difficult conditions to restore safety and enable the return of displaced families.
Since its launch in mid-2018, Masam has cleared over 520,000 explosive devices and made more than 72 million square meters of land safe for civilian use. The initiative is implemented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and is considered one of the most active demining efforts in Yemen.
Masam’s management reiterated its commitment to protecting Yemeni lives and supporting recovery efforts in liberated areas. The project also called on international organizations to increase support for mine action in Yemen, where millions of landmines are believed to have been planted by Houthi forces since the start of the conflict.
