Yemeni Security Forces Detain 34 Undocumented Migrants in Surprise Operation in Al-Mahra
Al-Mahra — Security forces in Yemen’s eastern Al-Mahra Governorate have apprehended 34 undocumented migrants during a surprise security operation conducted across several areas of the province, local authorities announced on Saturday.
According to a statement from the Al-Mahra Security Department, the operation targeted suspected smuggling routes and temporary shelters used by irregular migrants. The detainees, whose nationalities were not immediately disclosed, were taken into custody for entering the country without legal documentation.
Officials stated that the campaign was part of broader efforts to combat illegal migration and human trafficking networks operating along Yemen’s eastern coastline. The operation involved coordinated patrols and checkpoints in key districts, including Al-Ghaydah and Sayhut.
Authorities affirmed that the detained individuals are being processed in accordance with legal procedures and will be handed over to the relevant agencies for further investigation and potential repatriation.
Yemen’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden has made it a transit point for migrants, particularly from the Horn of Africa, seeking to reach Gulf countries. However, ongoing conflict and instability have increased the risks faced by migrants, often exploited by smuggling networks.
Security officials reiterated their commitment to upholding border security and called for enhanced regional cooperation to address the root causes of irregular migration.
