UNESCO Lists Yemen’s “Al-Dan Hadrami” as Intangible Cultural Heritage
Hadramout — UNESCO has officially inscribed Al-Dan Hadrami, a traditional poetic and musical art form from Yemen’s Hadramawt region, on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The recognition highlights the cultural significance of Al-Dan Hadrami, a centuries‑old practice that blends improvised verse with rhythmic melodies, often performed in social gatherings and community events.
The art form is considered a vital expression of collective identity, creativity, and oral heritage in southern Yemen.
By adding Al-Dan Hadrami to the global heritage list, UNESCO aims to safeguard and promote the tradition, ensuring its transmission to future generations despite the challenges posed by conflict and displacement in the country.
Yemeni cultural advocates welcomed the decision as an important step toward preserving the nation’s diverse heritage and strengthening international awareness of Yemen’s contributions to world culture.
