Yemen : Houthis Fast-Track Trials of Alleged Spy Cells Without Legal Representation
Sana’a – Houthi-controlled judicial authorities in Yemen have begun expediting the trials of dozens of detainees accused of belonging to alleged foreign “spy cells,” amid growing concerns over due process violations and the absence of legal representation for the accused.
According to local sources and human rights monitors, the trials—held in secretive sessions before the Houthi-run Specialized Criminal Court in Sana’a—have proceeded without defense lawyers present, and in some cases, without notifying the families of the defendants. The accused are reportedly charged with collaborating with foreign intelligence services, including those of the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi Ministry of Interior claimed earlier this month to have dismantled what it described as a “joint espionage network” operating under a Saudi-led command structure, allegedly involving the CIA and Mossad. The group released video confessions from some detainees, though rights advocates have questioned the credibility of the footage and raised concerns about possible coercion.
The trials come amid a broader crackdown by the Houthis on perceived dissent and alleged espionage, which critics say is being used to silence opposition and consolidate internal control. Several of the accused are believed to be former military officers, journalists, and aid workers.
International human rights organizations have called on the de facto authorities in Sana’a to halt the proceedings and ensure fair trial standards. “These are serious allegations that require transparent legal procedures, not show trials,” said a spokesperson for a regional rights watchdog.
The United Nations and diplomatic missions have yet to issue formal statements on the matter, but observers warn that the developments could further complicate efforts to revive peace talks and address Yemen’s deepening humanitarian crisis.
